Fascias and soffits sit right at the roofline, which means they catch everything running off the roof and everything overflowing from the gutter. On white UPVC that shows as green algae streaks and a grey weathered film. On timber weatherboards it’s the same growth, except the timber absorbs the moisture and starts to rot underneath.

How we clean them

From the ground, using a soft brush and a water-fed pole rather than pressure.

Fascia boards aren’t structural in the way a wall is. Hit UPVC with high pressure and you’ll force water behind the board and into the roof space. Hit timber with it and you’ll lift the paint.

Working from the ground means:

No ladders resting on the guttering, which is what usually bends it
No ladders on your conservatory roof or your borders
The soffits get done as well as the fascias, which ladder work often skips

Timber weatherboards need more care again, since the aim is to lift the growth without stripping the paint underneath.

Why it's worth doing before it looks bad

On timber especially, the green is a symptom rather than the problem.

Algae holds moisture against the surface. On UPVC that’s cosmetic, though left for years the weathering does eventually become permanent and no amount of cleaning brings it back to white. On timber the moisture is what starts the rot, and by the time a board is soft you’re replacing it rather than cleaning it.

It’s also the cheapest bit of a property to maintain and the most visible from the street.

Worth combining with gutter clearance

They’re in the same place and the same visit.

Most of the marking on a fascia comes from a gutter overflowing above it, so cleaning the boards without clearing the gutter means it comes back. We can usually do the two together on the same visit.

The same applies to window cleaning. If we’re already at the property with the pole system, adding the fascias is straightforward.

Will my fascias come back to white?

Usually, if the discolouration is algae and surface grime, which it normally is. UPVC that’s been left for many years can weather permanently, and in that case cleaning will improve it significantly without getting it back to new. We’ll tell you honestly what we think when we look.

Do you clean the soffits as well as the fascias?

Yes. The soffit is the underside board and it’s usually dirtier than the fascia, since it catches everything and never gets rained on. Ladder-based cleaning often misses it.

Can you clean painted timber weatherboards?

Yes, and it’s a gentler job than UPVC. The aim is to lift the growth without taking the paint with it, so it’s done at low pressure with a soft brush.

Should I have the gutters done at the same time?

It’s worth it. Most fascia staining is caused by a gutter overflowing above it, so cleaning the board without clearing the gutter means the marking returns.
